Reports have it that 22 people were killed and dozens injured in an explosion at a Kurdish wedding in the northeast Syrian city of Hasaka.
According to Al Jazeera, the Kurdish YPG, or People’s Protection Units, said it was unclear whether the blast was caused by a explosive device or a suicide bomber.
But a statement by the ISIL-affiliated Amaq news agency said a suicide bomber had attacked a gathering of Kurdish YPG fighters on the edge of the city with machine guns and an explosive vest.
Hasaka is mainly in the hands of the YPG after it evicted the Syrian army in August.
In the same vein, ISIL has claimed responsibility for suicide attacks in the central Syrian city of Hama that killed three people and wounded 11 others earlier on Monday.
Two suicide bombers wearing explosive-laden belts carried out the attacks near the ruling Baath party office and a police station, Amaq reported.
Syria’s state news agency SANA reported earlier that a suicide bomber detonated his explosives in al-Assi Square in Hama city, and the other blast occurred 15 minutes later.
Hama is Syria’s fourth-largest city and has seen relatively little fighting in recent years as the country’s conflict rages on. It is firmly under the control of President Bashar al-Assad’s forces.
Hama province is of strategic importance to Assad as it separates opposition forces in rebel-controlled Idlib from Damascus to the south and the government-controlled coast to the west.
In 2013, a major push by rebel groups to capture Hama was repelled by government forces after reinforcements were sent to the area.
Major demonstrations erupted in Hama in 2011 as the war broke out, but they were quickly suppressed.
Assad’s father and predecessor Hafez al-Assad brutally put down a Muslim Brotherhood uprising in Hama in 1982, killing thousands of people.
Meanwhile, about 15 Turkish-backed Syrian rebels were killed in clashes with ISIL fighters as they moved on the group’s strongholds in northern Syria, according to Turkish military officials.
About 35 Syrian rebels were wounded in the fighting, which seeks to capture seven residential districts south of the town of al-Rai.
According to a statement, “intense” clashes had taken place in the regions of Boztepe, Hardanah and Turkmen Bari and the casualties took place over the last 24 hours.
The bombardment of Aleppo by the Syrian government and its allies also intensified on Monday.
Government forces have taken territory to the north of the opposition-held enclave, and there’s been fierce fighting along the front line that cuts through the divided city.
“It’s not clear if the rebels, who have been besieged for weeks, can hold their ground,” said Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, reporting from Gaziantep, on the Turkish side of the border.
“And it is not clear if the government will be able to win in what could be a long war involving street-to-street fighting.”

Unbelievable! Soldiers tired of fighting, flee Boko Haram war
– Nigerian soldiers are reportedly deserting their posts in the northeast as the war against Islamist insurgents Boko Haram continues

Nigerian soldiers are again running away from fighting Boko Haram insurgents in the northeast because of a new psychological threat, The Sun is reporting.
According to the report, unlike in the past, the solders are not running away from the insurgents because they lacked weapons to fight but because the war has dragged on for too long and has become tiring for them.
The Sun quotes a top source in the military as saying that the army has been witnessing an incredibly high number of deserters this year alone, especially in the northeast where troops are abandoning their posts.
“They said the pass, which is not more than two weeks, is given to personnel after spending six months in the frontline, was not enough for them to solve family problems which emanated as a result of their absence and it did not give them enough time to stay with their children.
“Others said their long absence has resulted in broken homes where some wives have had to divorce their husbands,” some military personnel told The Sun, narrating how some soldiers deliberately deserted the warfront after getting the mandatory pass claiming they are going to see their families.
It reports that some troops have been in the theatre of war for over two years, which is way too long for some soldiers to stomach. In fact, some troops from a military encampment in Lagos have been in the northeast for more three years.
An unnamed troop narrated the sad tale of the soldiers on warfront thus: “Our long absence and separation from our families have ended up turning some of our wives to harlots because there are some soldiers, when they come back on pass, they find their wives pregnant and the authorities knows about this because we always report such cases.
“For some of us, our female children are beginning to sleep around and our sons engage in one criminal activity or the other all because their fathers are not at home…”
But Army public relations officer Colonel Sani Usman denied that soldiers are deserting the warfront.
He told The Sun: “We have started with the unit in Badagry, 112 Special Forces and some other ones.
“It is a gradual process but, I want you to understand is that you don’t pull people out of their locations just like that without taking into consideration other things.
“Right now, there is a unit of the army at Jaji who are undergoing post-deployment training because of the traumatic stress they went through.
“So, you have to prepare a unit to go into battle, it’s not an easy thing. There is an established procedure of going in and pulling out.
Those that are going in go to our Special Forces Training School at Buni-Yadi.
“Then, they will gradually change the unit and the unit will be repatriated to Jaji and go through induction training before they are reunited with their families”.
“So, it is not correct that soldiers are deserting the warfront because they have over-stayed there.
“I would have that you oblige me with the particulars of those soldiers who ran away because they have not been rotated.”
NAIJ.com investigations revealed that according to section 60 of the Armed Forces Decree of 1993, penalties for desertion is a jail term of not less than two years.

The Sun reports that Shettima revealed this when a six-member delegation of three Senate committees on women affairs, health and primary health, which was led by Senator Oluremi Tinubu paid him a visit.
“We have 59,000 widows and more than 20,000 orphans. In Monguno Local Government alone, there are 13, 000 orphans. So, how did those dishing out statistics of deaths come up with conclusion that roughly 15, 000 people died in crisis he queried.

Scores injured as truck crashes into electric pole in Abia

About 15 persons have been injured as truck crashed into electric poles on Monday, Octobr 4 in Abia state.
The tragedy occurred after the heavy duty truck which was heading to Akwa Ibom state, crashed into three poles, leaving two tricycle riders and their passengers severely injured.
According to The Nation, the truck violently crashed into the electric pole causing an explosion and fire outbreak around the area.
On seeing the explosion, people fled from their homes, shops and cars while some tried to rescue some injured persons.
Daily Post reports that some eyewitnesses said the fire, which started as a result of the explosion, fell poles and saw people run in different directions.
The eyewitnesses also disclosed that the truck drivers and their conductors on several occasions, used wooden planks to raise the power cables before they pass through the junction.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Nta Ogbonnaya Nta, , who also confirmed the incident, said the matter is being handled by the Ogbor Hill Police Division while the injured persons have been taken to the hospital.
However, this is not the first time this incident has occurred in the state as barely four months ago, a ghastly motor accident occurred in Abia state leaving six people dead.
According to reports sent to NAIJ.com by a witness, the accident occurred on Monday, May 23 along Umuahia/Okigwe road.
The reason for the accident was not ascertained but it appeared a collision between a bus and a truck resulted in the accident.
Witnesses at the scene helped the injured individuals that were still alive.

ECOWAS court to rule against Nigeria over Dasuki's detention
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice is set to rule on former national security adviser Sambo Dasuki’s petition that his rights had been violated by the Nigerian government.

– Government’s lawyers also denied that Dasuki ever fulfilled the conditions for his bail and was not released as ordered by three high courts
Premium Times is reporting that ECOWAS Court of Justice is set to rule against the Nigerian government in the case brought before it by the former national security adviser Sambo Dasuki over his continued detention.
According to the report, Dasuki filed a N500million lawsuit against the government for keeping him detained since December 29, 2015 even after three different high courts where he was arraigned on corruption charges granted him bail.
Lawyers representing the federal government Williams Obiora and Alu Agbi told the court that Dasuki was in detention for his own protection.
They noted that his case bordered on national security which superseded individual security, hence his detention by the State Security Service (SSS).
But Dasuki’s lawyer, Robert Emukperuo urged the court to disregard arguments on the grounds they were not in line with the documents filed.
Emukperuo asked the court to grant his client’s application oral evidence by the one of the witnesses alluded to safety and possibility of escape and not national security, contrary to one of the documents tendered by the defence.
Proceedings in the case had ended with the conclusion of oral evidence by two SSS officials and judgement was supposed to be on June 29 but the presiding judge Justice Friday Nwoke postponed the ruling because of a vacation.
Should the ECOWAS court grant Dasuki his prayers to be awarded damages for the alleged violation of his fundamental human rights by the Nigerian government as the ruling appears set to go, then Nigeria might have to pay Dasuki several millions of naira for detaining him unlawfully.
