The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to the reports supposing that the senators were plotting to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the move as laughable.

Mai Mala Buni, party’s national secretary, in a statement urged the senators “to stop this huge joke and concentrate on their primary constitutional responsibilities of lawmaking and discharging of their legislative mandates to their constituents at the National Assembly.”

“The attention of the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been drawn to media reports of a laughable impeachment plot by some Senators on President Muhammadu Buhari during Tuesday’s July 12, 2016 closed session of the Senate. This is a huge joke taken too far,” the statement reads.

Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, alongside two others are currently standing trial for supposed forgery of the Senate standing rules.

At the same time, the Senate president is facing the Code of Conduct Tribunal for offences bordering on anticipatory declaration of assets, among others.

The senate has regularly blamed President Buhari and his party for trying to stampede it into changing its leadership, cautioning that it would not bow to impulses of some elements in the executive arm.

Meanwhile, APC has defined the accusations as puerile and baseless.

It said:  “The party will not join issues on the Senate forgery suit and other court cases concerning some members of the 8th Senate. We advise the Senators in question to tow the same line and allow judicial processes run its normal and legitimate course. Repeated allegations that the court cases are politically-motivated by the President and APC are baseless.”

This came on a day Senator Aliyu Wamakko claimed the senators’ meetings held in his house were intended to repair the frosty relationship between the executive and legislature and not to commence impeachment move against the leader of the nation.

This is even as Senator Dino Melaye denied ever starting impeachment proceedings against President Buhari.
